Concert #030
Monday, June 20, 1988 - Ector County Coliseum (27) - Odessa, Texas

David Lee Roth [Skyscraper]
Poison [Open Up and Say Ahh]

Went with Kevin Theibeault? Efriam Garza? 1st time to meet Ephriam's brother Dirk, whom I've seen more concerts with than any other person. I met him out front of the venue after the show chanting "SLAYER", for no apparent reason, which was cool by me.
Poison  a band that I had come to loathe from their first outing was in support of their new sonic turd, Open Up and Say Ahh. This show did nothing to improve my outlook upon this travesty.

C.C. DeVille : So...CC was so bad, I mean SO BAD he fucked up Pop Goes the Weasel during his guitar solo, and had to stop the solo, as he just laughed at himself. Of course I'm a big guitar snob, but damn.
Another contender for worst solo ever. Totally in the top three, with Gary Richrath from REO Speedwagon ,Rick Springfield, and Glen Tipton from Judas Priest. Four if I count Janick Gers, but I guess I can't because he doesn't do literal concert guitar solos, just in the context of songs, thank the gods.
Initially I was a little down that Bass guitar god Billy Shehan wasn't there, for DLR, but this was overall the best sounding concert I have ever heard up to that point since ZZ Top.
David Lee Roth: David fucking DE-FUCKING-LIVERED. I was not a giant DLR fan before this show. But, holy fuck, having seen VH with Sammy, and DLR w/VAI and Bissonette.....
I gotta say Dave is an entertaining motherfucker. He let his band PLAY, and at one point, they broke out Jamaccian steele drums. All four members of the band got out and did this bad-ass number with steele-drums only. And at another point, Dave flew over us on top of a Surf board, suspended by wires.
Dave sounded great! The band was fucking unbelievable. One of the best sounds in a big hall I've ever heard. The only downside, was that the legendary Billy Shehan had pulled out of DLR prior to (or possibly during) Skyscraper production. Matt Bissonette, Greg the drummer's brother, was brought on to complete the new album and tour. I can not say he is comparable to Billy Shehan, I've only seen one person do Billy's parts right (See chick bass player for MacAlpine), but he had his own natrual groove with his brother, for sure, and he was great in his own right.
