Concert #025
Tuesday, May 13, 1986 - Tingley Coliseum, Albuquerque, New Mexico (1)
Ozzy Osbourne [Ultimate Sin] (1)
Metallica [Master of Puppets] (1) HOF
Went with Dan Beech. Took off to Albuquerque, NM after work, we got off from our jobs at Avis Car rental at 12 noon, no tickets. We drove straight there, and it took us about 7 hours to get there. When we finally arrived in Albuquerque, we stopped at a gas station and asked someone where the venue was. Luckily it wasn't too much further, So we arrived at the venue, parked, stepped in line for the ticket booth, which must have had 100 people or so, purchased 2 tickets. We turn to enter the venue, and hear a commotion behind us, as they closed the windows, because it was SOLD OUT 2 people behind us. BAD ASS!!!
Went inside to find that they had deputies that made everyone on the floor sitting down, like in elementary school, when it was bad weather and you couldn't go outside. Then, about 3 minutes before the show, a constable gives the signal, and everybody stood up and squeezed in toward the barricades. One of the craziest things I ever saw at a show. I certainly have never witnessed such a thing since.
Rough show, a LOT of fights, and pushing and shoving.
Finally, after the canceled show in 1984, and the small riot, here was my chance to finally see Metallica, and they really kicked ass. They were touring in support of Master of Puppets. I noticed that Cliff spit a big hacker at the beginning of the songs on the downbeat, right when the lights hit him. You can see him do it on Cliff 'Em All. They had little 2 foot crosses on the stage and a big Master tapestry behind them. They were really tight, and crushing. Cliff really was a monster, bigger than life. They were spectacular, and they didn't let me down.
After that, it was time for the master of mayhem, Ozzy, in support of his new one, The Ultimate Sin. With Jake E. Lee on guitar. What an under-rated guitarist, and he doesn't get the credit he deserved with Ozzy, and is still woefully under represented in Ozzy's solo sets today. This was also Randy Castillo's ( RIP) first home town gig w/ Ozzy. My second time to see Randy, I had seen him with Lita Ford a couple of years before in Odessa, TX. So, there is some music piped in, and down from the ceiling comes this big creature thing with glowing eyes. When it gets to the ground, it's arms open, and there is Ozzy, sitting in a throne. (see pic below)
He had big hair and was wearing some kind of MooMoo. He sounded great though, and put on a fantastic show. He had lots of energy back then. Jake E. Lee kicked ass, my first and only time to see him. The crowd
went crazy when Ozzy introduced the hometown son, Randy Castillo.
First time to see Metallica, and Ozzy Osbourne.
[1st time to see Ozzy] [1st time to see Metallica actually play]
Last concert with Dan Beech. Off to the Navy.
R.I.P. March 26, 2002, drummer, Randy Castillo (2) - Ozzy, Lita Ford, Motley Crue, Motels - stomach cancer
RIP Cliff Burton - September 27, 1986 During the European leg of the Damage Inc. tour in support of Master of Puppets, the band complained that the sleeping cubicles on their tour bus were unsatisfactory and uncomfortable. To decide who received pick of the bunks, Kirk Hammett and Burton drew cards.[15] On the evening of September 26, 1986, Burton won the game with an ace of spades, thereby getting the first choice of bunk and pointed at Hammett and exclaimed, "I want your bunk!" Hammett replied, "Fine, take my bunk, I'll sleep up front, it's probably better up there anyway." Burton was sleeping shortly before 7 am on September 27 when, according to the driver, the bus skidded off the road (the E4, 12 miles (19 km) north of Ljungby),[16] and flipped onto the grass in Kronoberg County[17] Burton was thrown through the window of the bus, which fell on top of him, resulting in his death.

Saw this show at the Kansas Coliseum in Wichita, KS...opening night of the tour! Metallica killed it. I can still see Burton's hair just twirling around as he head banged the entire set list. Ozzy (w/ Jake E. Lee) was good, but this night foretold of Metallica taking over the world.

DeleteI was there...first time seeing both these groups...amazing!!
ReplyDeleteJa, that was my first time to see both in action as well. Thanks for reading my blog!
DeleteI saw this tour in Chicago. I do remember Ozzy's black and yellow glitter moomoo. He's very sparkly. Definitely very sparkly. Very sparkly.
ReplyDeleteIndeed it was sparkly. And don't forget the big hair. He looked like half the ladies at the beauty parlor my mom would go to.
