Concert #023
Friday, December 13, 1985 - Ector County Coliseum - Odessa, Texas (21)

Dio [1]  [Sacred Heart]
 Rough Cutt [Rough Cutt]
So, I was slinging vinyl at the local college, KOCV, running my own show on Saturday night/Sunday mornings at midnight, called The Underground Metal Show. I ran two or three other time slots as well, but they were a bit more main stream, but still tilted METAL.
I got all my friends into this that I could. Local radio giants KUFO were gone, and future local big boys KBAT hadn't started up yet, so KOCV was the only promoter for this show.
So, you know the routine. "Lines are now open. If you are caller 12(or whatever) you will win two tickets to DIO and Rough Cutt this Friday night at the Ector County Coliseum.) We had an ASS LOAD of tickets. Somehow, my friends seemed to win tickets, it was the strangest phenomenon.
We get to the show, and nobody was there. Maybe 300 people showed....maybe...in a 3500-5000 seat arena!
It was AWESOME!!!!!
Rough Cutt was up first, and they were TERRIBLE. They did a cover of a song that is always accociated with the great Janis Joplin,  Take Another Piece of My Heart, making it into a call and response audience participation song. They substituted the words "Rough Cutt" for  "Come On".
Bad decision. My crowd was in front and, naturally, started to shout back "You SUCK!" everytime. Soon half the audience or more was doing it. "Rough Cutt" "You SUCK!" "Rough Cutt" "You SUCK!"
Shortino got really visibly PISSED.

Dio kicked ASS! Great set list, he was VERY gracious. This was a 5000 capacity venue, maybe, and no more than 300 people were there. He could have cancelled, but he gave us a show.
A show complete with a dragon, crystal ball, Knights that shot lazers out of their eyes. It was FANTASTIC. He thanked us profusely for attending, and went out of his way to shake as many hands as he could possibly reach.
Classy man.
Still had Vivian Campell on guitar for Dio. He looked really miffed, like he didn't want to be there, and was dismissed just a month or so later, making way for the great Craig Goldy.

Went with Rick dan? possibly Kim - Last show for the metal inquisition? Everybody joined military, or went off to college.

R.I.P. May 16, 2010, vocalist, Ronnie James Dio (aged 67) - Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio - metastasized stomach cancer

RIP Jimmy Bain - January 23, 2016, Jimmy Bain (aged 68) died while in his cabin on Def Leppard's "Hysteria on the High Seas" cruise. He was due to perform on the cruise with his group Last In Line the following day.[5] The performance did not go ahead, and band members informed fans on the cruise that he had been battling pneumonia for some time. The cause of death was determined to be lung cancer. Bain had not been diagnosed with cancer and was only aware of his pneumonia.

      2. I saw this tour at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin. Great seats, probably 7th row. Skipped school with my best friend to be the first in line to buy tickets. I do remember Dio put on a great show. I couldn't remember opening act. I think we stayed in the parking lot. Seems I didn't miss anything.

        1. Thank you for your comment, Wilson. You didn't miss a damn thing. Much like when I sat in the parking garage with one of my best concert buddies ever, and smoked out during Incubus opening for Black Sabbath in 1999.
