Concert #017
Monday, December 3, 1984 - Ector County Coliseum (15) - Odessa, Texas

REO Speedwagon [Wheels Are Turnin']Survivor [Vital Signs]

Pretty terrible concert. First ever totally lame concert I ever saw.
Survivor was getting a bit of a resurgence with a new singer and the song I Can't Hold Back, another yawner of a song, too over saturated with keyboards for my liking, but getting lots of radio play. I don't remember much, I was not what you would call a Survivor fan. I liked Eye of the Tiger when it came out, but I had to do a show in high school that played that god damn song so many times, that if I never hear it again, it will be to soon.
R.E.O. had a giant hit again with I Can't Fight This Feeling. But they were getting long in the tooth for me, I went because of what they sounded like on their old live album, and I loved their guitarist, Gary Richrath. However, what I got was this travesty. He played a solo that I could have done, and I am not a professional musician. This is easily one of my Top 10 worst solos I have ever witnessed, and it really made me sour on REO Speedwagon (that and their overly pop friendly sound). I couldn't believe how bad it was. It really saddened me.

RIP Gary Richrath  (aged 65) - guitar - REO Speedwagon [REO Speedwagon - 1984] died on September 13, 2015; news of his death was confirmed by his former REO Speedwagon bandmate Kevin Cronin. He was 65.

RIP Jimi Jamison (aged 63) died on September 1, 2014 at his home in Raleigh, Memphis, Tennessee, of a heart attack. His autopsy revealed the actual cause of death to be a hemorrhagic brain stroke, with "acute methamphetamine intoxication contributing".
