Concert #016
Wednesday, October 24, 1984 - Ector County Coliseum (14) - Odessa, Texas

Quiet Riot - [Condition Critical]  [RIP]

Went w/ Dan Beech...and...Tommy ?

Helix kicked it off, and were entertaining, with Vollmer doing a lot of shoulder rolls and it seemed like the band was having a really good time. They were getting a lot of airplay on MTV.
We met Helix bass player Daryl Gray at payphone bank in the lobby and got him to autograph our ticket stubs. My first autograph from a musician. He seemed shocked that anyone recognized him, and even wanted an autograph. Nice guy.

WhiteSnake took the stage next. They were finally all over FM radio for the first time in America, and were enjoying a lot of heavy rotation, with Slide It In, Guilty of Love, Slow and Easy, and Love Ain't No Stranger all on the radio all the time.
John Sykes did the greatest guitar solo I have ever seen. We were p(sykes)d to see him fresh off of playing with Thin Lizzy. And holy shit he DELIVERED.
We were hoping to see the legendary Cozy Powell do a drum solo, but, opening bands are limited on time, so this didn't happen.
A rare 4 piece during this period, and one of first shows without Jon Lord as he returned to Deep Purple just weeks before.

Quiet Riot: We were hyped up little hoodlums, and planned to throw a projectile at Kevin DuBrow, because of comments he had made about Ozzy, or some stupid shit like that, in some magazine like (s)Hit Parader or something. So, I had a 1 inch cube of plexiglass that I had been saving for the occasion. Luckily for Mr. Dubrow, and really for everybody, we got drunk and left it in car. However, as luck would have it, a roadie through out a tape ball that landed close to Dan. He picked it up and waited for his moment.
The lights went down, we're center stage, probably 3 people deep from the barricade, and we see a silouette in the blackness, right above us.
Dan hurls the tapeball, right as the band kicks in. The lights go up, and rubbing his eye, staggering back, is Kevin DuBrow, and he is really pissed off. Dan had scored him right in the fucking eye. I don't promote this type of behavior at any venue, but it was amazing.
Of course, we're dying laughing. Damn, that was AWESOME, sorry to say.
Caught my first pick from Carlos Cavazo. I shouted out CARLOS! during some solo, and he looked me right in the eye and gave me the smile and a nod, then  flipped a Quiet Riot pick right to me. And THATS the pick that I learned most the the foundations of my meager guitar skills with!! It had Quiet Riot printed on one side.
1st time to see Sykes and Sarzo, both of whom, I have seen in other bands on numerous occasions.
So, recap:
I saw Quiet Riot at their zenith. I saw Sykes and Cozy w/ Whitesnake, and I got my first pick, and my first autograph.
