Concert #015
Saturday, September, 15 1984 - Ector County Coliseum (13) - Odessa, Texas
Tickets were $12.50
Sammy Hagar [VOA]
Krokus (2) [the Blitz]
Lita Ford [Dancin' on the Edge]
Sammy's last tour before joining Van Halen.
This would be my second time to see Sammy Hagar and Gary Pihl. I would not see Sammy again for 20 years, and I finally saw Gary Pihl again this last spring (2016) 32 years later, playing guitar for Boston.
Sammy was great, songs like This Planet's On Fire, Trans AM, were still in his set list (unlike now), and were on FM radio constantly. Never hear them on classic radio now, but you couldn't go a day without hearing those, and others like Plain Jane, Heavy Metal, Can't Get Loose, Jessie's Girl, and on and on including Montrose hits.
Also this was my second time to see Krokus, who had a MAJOR shakeup, and their biggest charting album they would ever have. Fernando Von Arb became sole guitarist, making it a 4 piece, as Mark Kohler switched to bass for the recording and tour, ousting Chris von Rohr long time bassist, and they also kicked out Steve Pace the drummer. They had a big hit with a remake of Ballroom Blitz from Sweet.
My first and only time to see Lita Ford. I had her first two albums, she would get huge on the album after this one which was Dancing On the Edge. I was really trying to like her music, I thought she was a capable guitarist, but her music just wasn't quite there on the first album, it was a lot better on her second. I was a little disappointed that she didn't wear the leather one piece like on the Out For Blood cover, but she still looked hot.
This would be my first of four times to see Randy Castillo drum for three different bands.
Bought a Krokus shirt.

The VOA tour! I loved this show. Krokus is awesome and they rocked. Sammy is amazing and the VOA album was the soundtrack for my senior year of high school. I saw the tour in Houston Texas but Lita Ford was not with them.
ReplyDeleteThanks Eric, I need to re check. Maybe I saw Lita on a different tour package...maybe ratt or somebody.
DeleteAnyone else??
No Lita when I saw him in '84 at MSA in Indianapolis. Just Krokus.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mr. B. This is really driving me crazy. I can't find when I saw her, and I know it was on the Dancing on the Edge tour.
