Kiss (1) [Lick It Up] HOF
Vandenberg [Heading For a Storm]
Riot [Born In America]
Went w/ Dean "Spit" Purvis - We made a banner at Dean's house for a contest to win tickets and backstage passes.
We drew Paul Stanley's flying V, and Gene Simmons' Axe, and put flames in the corners, all painted up very well for 15-16 year old kids.
And I'll be damned, we won! My mom bravely worked her way up to the doors, through all the cat calls, and "Somebody's Mom" comments, where we were like 4th in line, waiting for them to open. She informed us that they had announced us as the winners on the radio, and gave us the station number and a quarter for the pay phone inside.
Of course we couldn't get through for a while, and the DJ wound up giving our backstage passes and free tickets to some chicks. What a dick.
Kiss had the Tank stage from Creatures of the Night.
I was fucking PUMPED to see RIOT! Rhett Forrester RIP came out on stage, took a chug of beer, then spit it into the air over the audience, all over me and a few people around me. Most people were like, "WTF?", but to me, at 15, I was like, "Fuck YEAH!" it was like a badge of honor.
RIOT did a great set, Mark Reale RIP was on fire. The criminally under-rated Sandy Slavin is one of the best rock drummers EVER in my opinion, up there close to Phil Rudd, as far as straight ahead rock drumming, put on a clinic. Rick Ventura is a fantastic rhythm player, and Kip Lemming is a solid bass player, that seems to play in the pocket very nicely.
I thought Vandenburg was pretty lame. How did they get the second spot? I couldn't believe they were billed over RIOT. All hype, no substance. They had a video on MTV, of a song that sucked.
That's all they had. Money and hype. Oh, and hairspray. Lots of hairspray. This was one of the biggest travesties in all my concert experiences, right up there with Slipknot headlining on their debut tour above Slayer and Sepultura circa 2000.
It was my first time to ever see Kiss, so I thought they were pretty good, especially at that time.
How could I foresee that I would work with them somewhere in the future?
This would be my favorite time to ever see KISS. The set list was Creatures of the Night, and Lick It Up slanted. Vinnie Vincent (Cusano) was impossibly skinny and looked like a really ugly girl. Eric Carr RIP was great, Paul danced around a lot, and played guitar a lot less than I expected, and Gene isn't a bad bass player when he tries.
Lot of dead people from this concert.
RIP Eric Carr - drummer - Kiss [KISS - 1984, 1985] - November 24, 1991 Carr suffered an aneurysm and was rushed to the hospital. Several days later, he suffered a brain hemorrhage and never regained consciousness. On November 24, 1991, Carr died at the age of 41. Coincidentally, he died on the same day as Freddie Mercury.
RIP Rhett Forrester vocals - Riot [Riot - 1984] January 22, 1994 Forrester was shot and killed at a Northwest Atlanta intersection on the corner of Lovejoy and Merrit off Techwood Drive after he refused to give up his vehicle in an attempted carjacking; he was 37 years old. The crime was not solved until recently. He was survived by his mother Lafortune Forrester, his brother, guitarist Lucky Forrester, his ex, Windi Grace, daughter, Jade Grace, and his fiance, Lori Plester, whom he was living with at the time.
RIP Mark Reale - guitar - Riot [Riot - 1984] January 25, 2012, Reale died of complications related to Crohn's disease. Reale, who had Crohn's disease most of his life, had been in a coma since January 11 due to a subarachnoid hemorrhage.

I saw this tour in Corpus Cristi TX. It was just Kiss and Vandenberg. I remember being disappointed seeing Kiss for the first time and they didnt have make up or any real show other than that stupid tank. Vandenberg was great but you could tell that the band was going no where. I wish Riot was there. I think Fire Down Under is one of the best rock records ever produced and I would have loved to see them.
ReplyDeleteJa, I loved Fire Down Under! You know Guy Speranza was from the San Antonio area. I found this cool complete concert from that tour on youtube. Sound is a few frames out of sync with video, but it is still killer. It looks like they are playing in a school cafeteria.

He mentions Odessa at one point. Says they just got in from Odessa, Texas.
