Concert #005
August 17, 1982 - Ector County Coliseum - Odessa, Texas (4)

Scorpions (1) [Blackout
Iron Maiden (1) [The Number of the Beast
Girlschool (1) [Screaming Blue Murder

Went w/ Dean Spit Purvis, and perhaps my brother who I recall was smitten by the Girlschool bassist, and quite enamored with seeing her panties under her mini skirt.
So, earlier in the summer, my brother David came home from college with a brand new ghetto blaster and some tapes dubbed from LPs.
He dug around and pulled out one that had the new  Scorpions - Blackout on one side, and the new Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast on the other. I couldn't believe it. I wore that poor cassette out, till there was nothing but bald plastic and remnants of magnetic dust.
First time to see Iron Maiden and Scorpions, and first and only time to see Girlschool.
Girlschool would never get bigger, and would dissolve a couple of years later.
Iron Maiden had really come into their own, and I don't think I've ever liked them quite as much as this first time. They played five of the eight songs from The Number of the Beast.
I got to see the great Clive Burr on his last stint with Iron Maiden, and Bruce's first. They were god-damned fantastic, and made me a fan for life. Clive played the drums really hard, and had a bit of a swing which was lost forever when he left. No offense to the GREAT Nico McBrain, but, Clive was my favorite Iron Maiden drummer. Bruce sounded simply amazing and the songs were still played in the correct tempo, unlike with Nico who tended, at least in the 80s to speed things up a bit. Adrian Smith and Dave Murray are still to this day some of my favorite guitarists, and of course the unbelievable Steve Harris. What can you say, there is no one on earth that can play and write like Steve Harris, he is a fucking MACHINE.
The Scorpions were at the height of their metal powers, and the fucking KILLED it. They had the pyramid pose, the giant drum riser with huge lights, which opened up and they walked out on stage from under the drums. Matthias Jabs was just amazing, highly under rated.

To me this would be the height of Scorpions songwriting and performance skills, because the next one, Love at First Sting, was still good, but seemed to be a lesser cloned version of Blackout.
Over the next few albums, they would descend into a cliche ballad band by the end of the 80's.
I really, really wanted to buy shirts, especially from Iron Maiden, but, I was 14 and had no money.
My mom picks us up, and we were telling her all about the show, and the shirts, and she says, "Oh, I meant to give you money so you could buy a shirt." D'OH!!!!

  1. I saw this show in Corpus Cristi Texas when I was 15. My first concert ever! Girlschool was good and I really liked their version of "Fox On The Run". Iron Maiden was amazing! I can vividly remember the OMG moment when Eddie walked on the stage. I went to see the Scorpions and they didnt disappoint. I just found a re-issue of the Scorpions 1982 tour shirt on line and ordered it. I still have the original but I dont think anyone over the age of 10 could wear it.
