Concert #004
July 30, 1982 - Chaparral Center - Midland, Texas

Loverboy (2) [Get Lucky
Point Blank [American Exce$$]

Went w/ Dean "Spit" Purvis, Sabas Fierro, and Tammy Jo Roman
My mom took us, dropped us off up front. I get out of the car, turn around, and immediately a guy with a beard and trenchcoat asks us (14 and 15 year old kids) if we wanted acid, or qualudes, or anything else. After nearly having a heart attack that my mom heard, and waving goodbye, I politely declined his generous offer. We didn't buy any that day, but we all thought it was really cool that we got asked.
So, we got inside and walked up to about 8 or 10 people from the barricade.
Point Blank started the show. They were climbing up the charts and on heavy rotation with "Nicole". They were put on a decent show. They were from Texas, and this was my first exposure to "Southern Rock" in the style of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, .38 Special, and bands of that ilk.
Loverboy was riding the giant hype wave, and enjoying some massive success on their second tour. With people behind the band like Bruce Fairbairn, producing (who would go on to massive success with Bon Jovi [Slippery When Wet & New Jersey] AC/DC [Razor's Edge] and revitalizing Aerosmith [Permanent Vacation & Pump] and engineer Bob Rock [Metallica - Motley Crue] and soon to be huge Bryan Adams who co-wrote Jump from Get Lucky, they were primed for success. However, they were really only successful for another album or so, before they just disappeared.
At this time though, they were really a well oiled machine, and put on a good show. They had purchased or leased the laser equipment from ZZ Top that I had seen the year before, I know it was the same because they stated it in an interview at the time, probably Circus or Hit Parader.
