Concert #003 - July 21, 1982 - Cheap Trick HOF [One on One] HOF - Axe [Offering] - Aldo Nova [Aldo Nova] - Saxon [The Eagle has Landed - Denim and Leather] - Ector County Coliseum - Odessa, Texas (3)

Concert #003
July 21, 1982  - Ector County Coliseum - Odessa, Texas (3)

Cheap Trick (1)  [One on One] HOF
Aldo Nova (1) [Aldo Nova
Axe  [Offering]
Saxon (1) [Denim and Leather]

Went with Dean Spit Purvis, Tammy Roman, my brother David, and possibly Sabas Fierro.
Cheap Trick was pretty fucking entertaining at this point in their career. They had just gotten they're OG bass player back, the year before, and Rick Nielsen had a different crazy custom guitar for every song.
The height of the concert for me was the song Gonna Raise Hell, and during Surrender, when Rick throws out Kiss records, and at some point, like half a box of picks, he just dumped out on the first few rows.
Bought a Cheap Trick Jersey, with the 5 neck guitar on the back.
We were hyped to see Aldo Nova. He was really being played heavily on FM radio. Fantasy was EVERYWHERE. He was very entertaining. I thought he would be huge. I bought this album, and it was on my turntable every day. He had one more LP that got a lot of play, and then just disappeared.
Axe: My god, AXE was bigger than Aldo Nova, and yet another Texas band. Their single Rock and Roll Party in the Streets (see below) was just about the biggest song around at that time. They had a great cover, a great album, a really hot single. You simply could not escape that song, it was at every party, on the radio every hour or so, every pep rally, everywhere. They would get a lot of play on the next album too, before tragedy struck while on tour with Motley Crue, guitarist Michael Osborne was killed in an auto crash in which a badly injured Bobby Barth was lucky enough to escape with his life. They dissolved after the incident.
Saxon: Well, Holy shit I was pumped up like a mother fucker to see this band, too. Dallas 1 p.m. was one of my favorite songs, and got a lot of play from the college radio station KOCV.

RIP Michael Osborne - Guitar - Axe - Car accident - The first rock star that I have seen, to pass away.

RIP Kevin Carlson - Dec. 12, 2010 - (53) guitar (Aldo Nova, Toys, the Eric Martin Band) 18-month battle with cancer

  1. Hey Sid, found your blog tonight searching this concert. I moved from Odessa in late 1982, not long after seeing this show. What is your full name and what schools did you go to? I've been going through your blog and all the shows. You did a great job at archiving all this. Thanks for all you work on this blog.

    1. Hey, thanks.
Sid Nichols, and I was class of 85 Permian High School.
I then went on to KOCV and started and ran the metal show at midnight, on Saturdays from 85-87. I have a lot more concerts to go, (about half of the Dallas years) almost ready to go, when I get time to publish them.
      And your name, unknown?

  3. Hi. I was at this concert in 1982. I was visiting my nana who lived in Midland. I graduated 1983 in Las Cruces New Mexico...and moved to Midland in May '83. I heard Fantasy on the radio at work last night. Was looking up the concert on Google and found your posts about it. Thank you for archiving it. Brings back a lot of great memories!
    Debbie
