Concert #027
Thursday, June 26, 1986 - Ector County Coliseum - Odessa, Texas (24)
Judas Priest (1) [Fuel for Life] (Turbo)
Dokken (0) [Under Lock and Key]
Thursday, June 26, 1986 - Ector County Coliseum - Odessa, Texas
Doors opened at 7:00 and bands start at 8:00 P.M., as per usual. We wanted to get close, which meant my best concert mates would meet at my apartment by 2:00 to start listening to music, and getting properly hopps and/or herbed upped. Load up and get down to the Ector County Coliseum, to wait in line for 3 hours, in the raging desert sun.
get there about 4:00,
Dokken cancelled - a local band named Aerial played in their stead.
So, we are in line, about 4 people from the door, waiting for the venue to open. There were four to six lines, when a guy comes out, and announced that Dokken had canceled, and that if anybody wanted a refund to step over to the ticket window. The four guys right in front of us, started whining about it, "Man, I came to see Dokken, I want my money back!) They stepped over to the box office, and suddenly, we were in the front of the line. These were all General Admission shows, so it was a race as soon as they opened the door to get to the barrier. Sounds reasonably safe, right?
First time to see the Judas Priest.
They sounded phenomenal! They sounded more like a bootleg I heard a few years later, and a lot less like the live LP Priest Live! I didn't like some of the newer songs, like "Parental Guidance"...seriously, what were they thinking? Locked In, and Turbo, and the opener Out in the Cold were great, and the Sentinel, Victim of Changes were fucking AWESOME!
Glen Tipton's guitar solo was pretty awful, and it's the same one I have seen him play for the last 30 years. It never changes. You know, for a guy that plays some of the sweetest, tastiest, and most memorable leads in the context and framework of a song in the history of heavy metal, he sure does a pretty, ...pretty, ...pretty sad guitar solo.
I also noticed, and have noticed every time that I have seen Judas Priest, that they turn the volume up as the concert progresses, and by the end, it is insanely loud.
Met Tracey O for the first time, what a damn fine day.
Kim[ex] punched me as I passed her in the crowd behind Tracey.
Went w/ Ricky Daniel.
Concert was the night before the live video filmed in Dallas, on June 27, 1986, So, basically a dress rehearsal for Dallas.
Purchased a Judas Priest jersey - $15
